Rory Stewart: Afghanistan marks the end of liberal interventionism

The former cabinet minister on why there was no need for the US to withdraw from Afghanistan

By George Eaton and Phil Clarke Hill

There are few Western commentators who know Afghanistan better than Rory Stewart, who walked across the country in 2002 and who founded a charity, the Turquoise Mountain Foundation, in the region.

In this video interview, we discuss whether the Afghanistan war was always doomed to fail, why the Afghan government collapsed so swiftly and what the return of the Taliban to power means for the US and the world.

Mr. Stewart also discusses his view on US President Joe Biden, and what he believe the UK must do now.
