Watch: MEP in a Merkel mask interrupts Jean-Claude Juncker’s State of the Union speech

The President of the European Parliament had to pause proceedings to ask Gianluca Buonanno to remove his mask of the German Chancellor.

DRAMA at Jean-Claude Juncker’s State of the Union speech in Strasbourg, as an Italian MEP turned up wearing an Angela Merkel mask. Excitement struck the event – which had, at best, promised a better turnout than usual of sad looking men in grey suits trapped in headsets – when the European Parliament President, Martin Schulz, had to stop proceedings to ask Gianluca Buonanno, a Lega Nord MEP, to remove the mask.

After standing up and waving wearing the mask, Buonanno was asked to take it off so that the President of the European Commission could get on with his speech uninterrupted. Buonanno instead removed his headphones and bounced down the steps to shake hands with the nonplussed Juncker.
