The quiet influence of Simple Politics: the Instagram page changing news

Simple Politics founder Tatton Spiller on how a page started when his “personal and professional life were both a wreck” became a pandemic smash-hit.

By Eleanor Peake

“For most of our followers, Simple Politics is the only place they get their news,” says Tatton Spiller. “If it didn’t exist, would they get their news from somewhere else? Or would they just not get the news?”

Six years ago, just before the 2015 general election gave the UK its first majority Conservative government in decades, Spiller, 40, set up an Instagram page called Simple Politics. If you haven’t heard of it, you will still instantly recognise its blue and white graphics which flood social media.
