Families of NHS staff who die from coronavirus will receive £60,000 payments

By Samuel Horti

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has announced a life assurance scheme that will pay £60,000 to the families of frontline NHS and social care staff that die from Covid-19.

He said 82 NHS staff and 16 care workers have died from coronavirus. “They have dedicated their lives to caring for others, and I have a deep personal sense of duty that we must care for their loved ones,” he said.

The government was considering how it can help the families of other key workers that have died from coronavirus, he said.

During the daily coronavirus Downing Street briefing, he also announced that some suspended NHS services would restart as of tomorrow, beginning with cancer care and mental health support. “The exact pace of the restoration will be determined by local circumstances on the ground,” he said.
