Falling A&E attendance and the shuttering of NHS services during lockdown has meant some people are going without healthcare they desperately need. Yesterday, Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced that NHS services would begin reopening today, starting with urgent care, such as for cancer patients. But can the government stop the rise in non-coronvirus deaths?
That’s the question posed by New Statesman political correspondent Ailbhe Rea in a piece today. “This is the difficult task Hancock faces in the coming weeks: reconciling the “stay at home” message (expected soon to be revised within government in favour of a different slogan) with the message that “the NHS is open”, she writes.
