Conservative minister Tracey Crouch quits government over betting U-Turn

The Chatham and Aylesford MP has resigned.

By Stephen Bush

Tracey Crouch, the junior minister for culture media and sport, has resigned her ministerial post after the government delayed plans to reduce the maximum amount that can be wagered at Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (FOBTS) from £100 to £2.

Crouch, who won her Chatham and Aylesford seat from Labour in 2010, first became a minister in the culture department 2015 under David Cameron, a post she retained under Theresa May.

The delay, from April 2019 to October 2019, is expected to boost the Treasury’s revenues by £1.15bn and will give bookmakers more time to adjust to the loss in revenues.

But it is likely that the government could have to U-Turn on the measure anyway, as Opposition MPs are set to vote against the change while there are sufficient Conservatives who have spoken against it to block the measure.
