Giggs named in parliament

Lib Dem MP John Hemming names the Premiership player.

By George Eaton

In a dramatic moment in parliament, the Liberal Democrat MP John Hemming has just named Ryan Giggs as the footballer named on Twitter as taking out a superinjunction to prevent the media reporting on an extramarital affair.

“With about 75,000 people having named Ryan Giggs on Twitter it is impractical to imprison them all,” Hemming said.

He was sternly rebuked by the Speaker, John Bercow, who told him that he should be talking about the principles involved, not naming people.

Using parliamentary privilege, Hemming also said that the Times columnist Giles Coren was the journalist who had been threatened with legal action for naming another player who has obtained a superinjunction.
