Tories win Thirsk and Malton seat

Anne McIntosh wins last remaining general election seat with a large majority.

By New Statesman

The Conservatives have won the last remaining seat in the general election, the north Yorkshire constituency of Thirsk and Malton.

Anne McIntosh won the seat for the Tories, with 20,167 votes. Liberal Democrat Howard Keal was in second place with 8,886, while Labour’s Jonathan Roberts was third with just 5,169.

The vote was delayed because of the death of UKIP candidate John Boakes during the election campaign.

McIntosh was shadow minister for environment, food, and rural affairs while the party was in opposition. She said: “We do feel very neglected in this part of the world after 13 years of a Labour government.”

Thirsk and Malton is a new constituency, which was formed by merging the seats of Ryedale and Vale of York.
