Harry Reid, Senate Majority Leader and Democratic political veteran, is running for a fifth term against a fierce challenge from Sharron Angle, a Republican candidate with strong Tea Party backing.
Defeating the 70-year-old Senate leader would be an enormous victory for the Republican Party. Angle, a Nevada Assembly member and former teacher, is seeking to exploit the unpopularity of Obama’s agenda and Reid’s perceived closeness to it.
Many Democrats believe they are now better placed to hold on to this fiercely contested seat after Republican activists declined to choose a more moderate candidate.
During one debate, Angle looked at her opponent and suggested: “Man up, Harry Reid. You need to understand that we have a problem with social security.”
Questioned by a radio host in one interview about her false claims that sharia law was being adopted in two US states, she replied: “I had read that in one place, that they have started using some sharia law there.
“That’s what I had read.”
With the polls neck and neck in the mid-40s, the eyes of the nation will be on this particular battle.
