Prince Philip: Reactions and Tributes

The Duke of Edinburgh and husband of Queen Elizabeth II has died aged 99.

By New Statesman

The death of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, aged 99, has sparked tributes and condolence messages from public figures across the UK and around the world.

A number of common themes stand out among the reactions. Particularly notable is sympathy for Queen Elizabeth II, his married partner of 73 years, who once described the Duke of Edinburgh as her “strength and stay”. Also prominent is praise for his establishment, in 1956, of The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme for young people, which has since become the primary youth achievement award scheme in the world.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s distinguished military service during the Second World War was also recalled by a number of political figures who had spent time with him during royal occasions and tours. As were his charm, affability and faculty for making people from all walks of life feel welcome and at ease.

The below is a selection of extracts from these commemorations.

“He was an environmentalist, and a champion of the natural world long before it was fashionable.
“With his Duke of Edinburgh awards scheme he shaped and inspired the lives of countless young people and at literally tens of thousands of events he fostered their hopes and encouraged their ambitions.
“We remember the duke for all of this and above all for his steadfast support for Her Majesty the Queen.
“Not just as her consort, by her side every day of her reign, but as her husband, her ‘strength and stay’, of more than 70 years.”

Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party:

“The United Kingdom has lost an extraordinary public servant in Prince Philip.
“Prince Philip dedicated his life to our country – from a distinguished career in the Royal Navy during the Second World War to his decades of service as the Duke of Edinburgh.
“However, he will be remembered most of all for his extraordinary commitment and devotion to The Queen.
“For more than seven decades, he has been at her side. Their marriage has been a symbol of strength, stability and hope, even as the world around them changed – most recently during the pandemic. It was a partnership that inspired millions in Britain and beyond.
“My thoughts are with The Queen, the Royal Family and the British people as our nation comes together to mourn and remember the life of Prince Philip.”

Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats:

“His quiet and steadfast counsel and support of the Queen is perhaps his greatest if unquantifiable contribution to our nation’s history.”

Tony Blair, former leader of the Labour Party:

“Our whole nation will be united in sadness at the passing of Prince Philip. He will naturally be most recognised as a remarkable and steadfast support to the Queen over so many years. However, he should also be remembered and celebrated in his own right as a man of foresight, determination and courage.”

David Cameron, former leader of the Conservative Party:

“He showed true true dedication to our country, with unstinting service stretching back to his courageous naval duty in the Second World War. He was a huge part of our national life since long before most of us were born.”

Sir John Major, former leader of the Conservative Party:

“A distinguished naval officer, he was – for over 70 years – the ballast to our Ship of State.
“Modest to the core, and hating any kind of fuss or bother, he epitomised the British spirit and remained true to himself right up to the very end.”

Theresa May, former leader of the Conservative Party:

Michelle O’Neill, Northern Ireland’s Deputy First Minister:

“Over the past two decades there have been significant interventions by the British royal family to assist in the building of relationships between Britain and Ireland.

“From his patronage of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, to his close association with the University of Edinburgh as Chancellor for over fifty years and his commitments to countless charities and organisations, Prince Philip’s long contribution to public life in Scotland will leave a profound mark on its people.

“On behalf of the people of Ireland, I wish to convey my condolences to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, her children, her extended family and the people of the United Kingdom.

“I recall with special appreciation how welcome he made Sabina and I feel in 2014, when I was making the first State Visit by an Irish Head of State to the United Kingdom in 2014. My hope is that these visits in 2011 and 2014, which he shared, will continue to be symbols of what we share as neighbours in friendship, peace and a sustainable future.”

“On behalf of all the people of the United States, we send our deepest condolences to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the entire Royal Family, and all the people of the United Kingdom on the death of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.

From his service during World War II, to his 73 years alongside the Queen, and his entire life in the public eye — Prince Philip gladly dedicated himself to the people of the UK, the Commonwealth, and to his family. The impact of his decades of devoted public service is evident in the worthy causes he lifted up as patron, in the environmental efforts he championed, in the members of the Armed Forces that he supported, in the young people he inspired, and so much more. His legacy will live on not only through his family, but in all the charitable endeavors he shaped.
“Jill and I are keeping the Queen and Prince Philip’s children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in our hearts during this time.”
