Had the 300,000 blue-rinse Tory members on the ground voted for Kenneth Clarke over Iain Duncan Smith in the Conservative leadership contest of 2001, the Tories would have opposed the Iraq invasion, ensured Tony Blair lost in the Commons and possibly even stopped the war from being launched.
