One of the giants of contemporary music, the French composer Pierre Boulez, is celebrated at London’s Southbank Centre this weekend. Exquisite Labyrinth: The Music of Pierre Boulez, a six-concert mini-season curated by the painist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, begins tonight with Susanna Mälkki conducting the Royal Academy of Music Manson Ensemble. Other highlights include Péter Eötvös conducting the London Sinfonietta in a concert of Boulez’s electronic works, and Aimard himself, together with Tamara Stefanovich, performing Boulez’s piano works on Sunday 2 October.
You can listen to Aimard talking about Boulez with composer Nico Muhly and Gillian Moore, Southbank Centre’s Head of Contemporary Culture, in a podcast here.
Our classical music critic Alexandra Coghlan will be reviewing Exquisite Labyrinth for newstatesman.com
