Jonathan May-Bowles named as Murdoch’s attacker

Protestor threw shaving foam pie at newspaper mogul during Commons select committee hearing.

By Samira Shackle

The NS can reveal that the protestor who lobbed a shaving foam pie at Rupert Murdoch during the select committee hearing was Jonathan May-Bowles, a comedian and activist who uses the name Jonnie Marbles.

The hearing had been going for two hours when the attack took place. Murdoch’s wife, Wendi Deng, instantly jumped into action and whacked the attacker, who was then escorted out. Journalists inside the hearing say he was sitting four rows behind, then calmly walked over and shoved the pie in Murdoch’s face.

His final tweet before the attack read:

The police confirm that a man has been detained. According to the BBC’s Nick Robinson, James Murdoch is very angry that police failed to protect his father. The hearing has now resumed — although Murdoch Snr is without his jacket.
