Thomas Cook collapse leaves 150,000 stranded

Travel operator Thomas Cook has collapsed after failing to secure a deal for an additional £200m in funding, leaving 150,000 holiday goers stranded. The government is preparing a huge repatriation operation to bring British residents home, but has refused calls to step in to save the company, which employs more than 20,000 people worldwide.

Labour promises to scrap private schools

A Labour government would abolish private schools and redistribute their endowments and other property to the state sector, under radical plans endorsed by delegates at the party’s conference. The vote came after shadow education secretary Angela Rayner announced that Labour would scrap schools inspectorate Ofsted and replace it with a new monitoring system designed to help schools collaborate rather than compete with each other. 

Hundreds arrested in Egypt protests

Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi’s government has arrested hundreds of people protesting against its rule. The protests came despite an effective ban on protests imposed by the regime six years ago.

Joint List back Gantz to get rid of Netanyahu

Israel’s Joint List majority-Arab parties are backing Benny Gantz in his bid to form a government in order to get rid of long-serving prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. It is the first time the bloc has backed a candidate for prime minister since Yitzhak Rabin in 1992. 

Fleabag and Killing Eve stars clean up at Emmys

British stars Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Jodie Comer took home top top prizes at the Emmys in Lost Angles on Sunday night. Waller-Bridge won best leading comedy actress, best comedy series and best comedy writing for her show Fleabag, while Comer won best actress in a drama series for playing serial killer Villanelle in Killing Eve
