John Bercow reelected as Speaker of the House of Commons

The Speaker is voted through by the Commons, in its first sitting of the new parliament.

John Bercow has been reelected Speaker of the House of Commons.

In the first vote of the new parliament, usually a formality, the Speaker retained his seat.

Bercow has faced more controversy than past Speakers, in that the Tories attempted a plot to unseat him in the last day of parliament before it dissolved for the election, and so his reelection was not as sure a thing as such votes have been in the past.
