Frank Briant, the Liberal MP for Lambeth North, died in 1934. In addition to Labour, National Labour and Liberal candidates, Alice S G Brown stood in the by-election as an independent (some newspapers described her as an “independent imperialist”). By 1950, she had moved to Sidmouth, Devon. On August bank holiday, two of her collection of wallabies escaped and were spotted by a local water engineer, Bert Scadding. It took several hours to recapture them.
