New hires at the New Statesman

Jasper Jackson is joining the NS as our new digital editor; Chris Deerin becomes Contributing Editor (Scotland); and Lizzie Palmer joins the online team as a sub-editor.

The New Statesman is delighted to announce three new hires joining the magazine during the general election campaign.

From next week, Jasper Jackson joins the New Statesman as its digital editor. Jasper is a former assistant media editor of the Guardian, and correspondent for The Media Briefing, and he brings in-depth knowledge of digital strategy and a keen news sense. He will oversee the New Statesman‘s digital expansion and will be responsible for web commissioning. He starts on 8 May.

Jasper said: “The New Statesman‘s thoughtful and incisive coverage has attracted a large and loyal following online and I am delighted to have the opportunity to build on that foundation. It’s an exciting time for the New Statesman, and ensuring as many people as possible get the most out of our journalism is a task I will relish.”

Former Telegraph comment editor and political editor of the Daily Record Chris Deerin joins the team as Contributing Editor (Scotland). He will write every week across the print magazine and website, providing sharp analysis of Scotland’s changing political landscape. Chris is currently working as director of external relations at the Blavatnik School of Government, Oxford University, but will be moving back full time to Stirling in the summer. He said: “As Theresa May works her way through the Brexit maze, the Scottish cloud looms overhead. All bets are off, regardless of how we voted in 2014. Nicola vs Ruth vs Kezia is one of the best shows in town. How does this end? I’ll try to figure it out.”

Completing the new hires will be Lizzie Palmer, who joins the NS from the Daily Mail as an online sub-editor. Lizzie will be responsible for the production of New Statesman‘s digital editions and maintaining editorial standards across the NS website.

Helen Lewis, deputy editor of the New Statesman, said: “There is a real risk that this general election campaign might lead to mass outbreaks of apathy, so the NS is committed to finding innovative, intelligent and appealing ways to tell the big political stories of the day. These three appointments will help us do just that. Jasper will be a huge asset as the NS continues to grow its presence and its revenues online. Chris is one of the most respected commentators on Scottish politics, and his appointment shows the New Statesman‘s commitment to covering the unfolding political realignment happening there. Lizzie will make our journalism sparkle and make sure the high standards of the print magazine are carried over to our online presence. They will be working with the best team in journalism, and I’m looking forward to seeing what they can do.”

The New Statesman currently has two open vacancies: head of production and editorial designer/developer.
