Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said the government will have its coronavirus track and trace system ready by 1 June, the date some primary schools are set to reopen.
Johnson, speaking at Prime Minister’s Questions, initially said he had “growing confidence” that the “world-beating” system would be up and running by 1 June, but added that: “Yes, it will be in place by 1 June.”
By that time, the UK will have 25,000 contact tracers in place, capable of tracing 10,000 new Covid-19 cases a day, he said.
Earlier today, Justice Secretary Robert Buckland said he was hopeful the government would have a track and trace system in place by 1 June, but that it wouldn’t be “fully developed” for “several weeks”.
