The vice president of the European Commission believes Brits will be able to safely take summer holidays in Europe this year.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock has said people are unlikely to be able to holiday abroad because of the coronavirus crisis, but Margrethe Vestage told BBC Radio 4 that she believes “it can be done safely” in Europe.
“I would hope so. I think that there’s discussion over it at every dinner table in Europe and probably also in the UK.
“We really need a break from this. Can we go as we planned, or will we have to stay within the borders of our home country? We think that it can be done safely.”
She said the planned opening of Germany’s borders to France and Austria from this weekend was a “very good sign”.
