Face away from other public transport users if two-metre gap not possible, government says

By Samuel Horti

Public transport passengers that cannot keep a two-metre distance with others should instead face away from those around them, new government guidance has said.

The Department for Transport guidance on safe travel during the pandemic says the public should avoid public transport when possible, especially around peak times. If people must travel, they should wear a face covering, use contactless payment and keep two metres apart from other passengers.

“There may be situations where you can’t keep a suitable distance from people,” it says, and in these cases “you should avoid physical contact, try to face away from other people”.

Passengers should also wash or sanitise their hands both before and after travel.

Operators are encouraged to remove or limit seating to make social distancing easier.
