US may never restore WHO funding, secretary of state says

By Samuel Horti

The US may never restore its recently suspended funding to the World Health Organisation, secretary of state Mike Pompeo has said.

The US was the organisation’s biggest donor until last week, when President Donald Trump halted funding, citing the body’s response to the coronavirus crisis.

Pompeo said the US government would “take a real hard look at the WHO”, and that the UN health body required a “structural fix”.  “It may be the case that the United States can never return to underwriting, having US taxpayer dollars go to the WHO,” he said.
