Deaths in Europe continue downward trend

By David Ottewell

A total of 5,534 new coronavirus-related deaths were recorded across the world yesterday, the lowest figure for more than a week.

Italy, Spain and France all recorded fewer than 500 deaths. The figures continue a downward trend that suggests central Europe may be past its peak level of deaths – but it’s worth noting that numbers published over the weekend are always subject to under-reporting.

Deaths in the US continue to rise. The country has now recorded a total of 40,661 deaths related to Covid-19, nearly double Spain’s tally and more than double the figure in France.
