Ireland’s early lockdown has saved lives, and highlighted the UK’s failings

While the UK government pursued “herd immunity” and tens of thousands flocked to the Cheltenham races, the Irish government was cancelling the St Patrick’s Day parade and closing most pubs. 

On the New Statesman today, journalist Caelainn Hogan – author of Republic of Shame and writer for the New Yorker, the New York Times Magazine, Harper’s and the Washington Post – chronicles the Irish response to the coronavirus, and contrasts it with the UK government’s. Ultimately, Ireland has outperformed the UK during the pandemic, and its early lockdown has saved lives, she argues.
