Winner: Anonymous

By New Statesman

2010 will go down as the year the information wars began: WikiLeaks became a household name, while in the background fears of a two-tier internet began to rumble. Into the melee strode the figure of Anonymous, a 21st century Leviathan made up of 1,000 chat-room dwellers more known for exposing Scientology and making up humorous captions for pictures of cats. Anonymous brought the fight to WikiLeaks’ censors, bringing down the websites of companies which stopped serving the whistleblowers. They found time for a few lulz, too. Sure, Anonymous aren’t perfect. What with the masks, pseudonyms and dramatic threats, they take themselves a bit seriously. But who’d call them losers? A magazine that doesn’t really like having a website, that’s who.
