Watch: Margrethe Vestager on tech policy after Covid-19

The European Commission executive vice president speaks to NS Tech editor Oscar Williams at the New Statesman's Global Policy Forum.

By NS Events

Tech has been the key to the coronavirus puzzle, from contact tracing, to business continuity to keeping in touch with loved ones during lockdown. The centrality of tech to the pandemic response has brought the “coronavirus trilemma” into focus: how can governments limit deaths, gradually lift lockdowns, and uphold all civil liberties? Most have opted for a and b, with tech and surveillance used to ensure them. How can tech policy ensure that citizens health and civil rights are protected?

On 12 June, the New Statesman and the Spotlight policy supplement convened an online global policy forum, which brought together former and current leaders from politics, business and international organisations to discuss how we can meet the challenges of a post-pandemic world.  In this session, Margrethe Vestager, executive vice president of the European Commission for A Europe Fit for the Digital Age joined editor of NS Tech Oscar Williams to explore tech policy after coronavirus.
