The New Statesman is delighted to announce a new senior hire to its growing international team under Jeremy Cliffe.
Katie Stallard joins as Senior Editor, China and Global Affairs, from the Wilson Center in Washington, DC, where she is a Global Fellow. Stallard is an award-winning journalist who was posted in both Beijing and Moscow as a correspondent for Sky News, and is the author of Dancing on Bones: History and Power in China, Russia, and North Korea, forthcoming with Oxford University Press in May 2022.
In her new role, Stallard will lead the New Statesman’s China coverage, as well as write, commission, edit articles and features, host audio-visual output and lead new editorial projects. Stallard said: “I am thrilled to be joining such a storied publication and an amazing team, whose commitment to thoughtful and thought-provoking journalism I have long admired, and whose mission to analyse and explain the events shaping our world matters more than ever. I grew up with the New Statesman, so it’s a real privilege to be part of the ambitious plans for its future.”
Stallard will report to Cliffe, the New Statesman’s International Editor. He said: “Katie brings to the international team both reporting experience from around the globe and huge expertise on the defining topic of our age: China’s rise. Her arrival confirms the New Statesman as the must-read publication for anyone who wants to understand our world and our times.
Jason Cowley, Editor-in-Chief of the New Statesman, said: “I’m delighted Katie is joining us. She was the outstanding candidate in interview. Her experience as a broadcaster and journalist working in Beijing and Moscow will be invaluable as we deepen our coverage of China and geopolitics. She will be based in Washington, DC and help lead our international expansion.”
Stallard joins the New Statesman at a time of considerable growth, with paid-for circulation at a 40-year high after a 75 per cent rise in digital subscriptions in 2020. The title has set up an audio and visual team, launched new products, including the World Review newsletter and podcast, and is expanding its international coverage under the leadership of Jeremy Cliffe and Megan Gibson, as well as its coverage of environment and climate issues.
