As part of a continued expansion and a major investment in quality journalism, the New Statesman is looking for a recent graduate from a BAME background to join our team as one of our graduate trainees.
This unparalleled introduction to journalism will involve working with some of the UK’s best-known writers on politics and culture, in a highly innovative and growing newsroom.
It is a full-time position with a competitive salary and opportunities for ongoing employment. It will involve a six-month training period that will be followed, once completed, by at least another six months working on the team.
It will provide formal training in a wide range of skills, including:
- Finding and writing news stories
- Feature writing
- Interviewing
- Data journalism and data science
- Sub-editing
- Finding and promoting stories on social media
- Media law
- Investigative reporting
- Video journalism
- AI and computer-assisted reporting
Applicants will need to provide evidence of commitment to a career in journalism. This could include: work experience, self-published work and/or completion of formal journalism training.
This role will be based in our central London offices, although it is likely that it will involve remote working, depending on the latest Covid-19 situation.
Successful candidates will have:
- A strong interest in politics, economics, culture, and the forces and ideas that shape our world
- Previous experience of writing on these subjects
- Ideas, enthusiasm and ambition
