Regional development conference announced

The New Statesman event will tackle regional development in an age of “levelling-up”

By Spotlight

The New Statesman will host an event on regional development in the aftermath of Covid-19, Brexit and in the context of the government’s “Levelling-up” agenda.

Local elections this year underlined the importance of regions in delivering economic, social and environmental change. As the country moves into a post-Brexit position, central government and its Shared Prosperity Fund is also under scrutiny as a replacement for the EU funding that supported deprived parts of the UK.

The Spotlight online event builds on the New Statesman’s series of events on the Northern Powerhouse and will bring together stakeholders and decision-makers from across the public and private sectors to discuss the future of regions.

Attendees will also discuss what the strategy for growth post-covid and post-Brexit may look like, the lessons from the success of the “Golden Triangle” of Oxford, Cambridge and London, and policy initiatives like the Northern Powerhouse and the Midlands Engine. The conference will hear from Sellafield about the role of industry in creating sustainable regional economies, public transport and infrastructure outside of London, and from the Liverpool Region LEP on how to tackle inequalities between areas.

Confirmed speakers include Lord Michael Heseltine, Lisa Cameron MP who Chairs the Health APPG, Metro Mayor Jamie Driscoll, and Secretary of State for BEIS Kwasi Kwarteng MP. They will be joined by a range of experts including representatives from ODI Leeds, Sellafield, and the Phoenix Group.
