By New Statesman

The New Statesman has appointed George Eaton, formerly political editor, and Tom Gatti, formerly head of books and features, to new roles as joint deputy editors of the New Statesman, reporting to the editor-in-chief, Jason Cowley.

Stephen Bush, formerly special correspondent, is promoted to political editor. Helen Lewis, who is also working on a book and other writing projects, remains as associate editor.

Jonn Elledge, formerly editor of CityMetric, the New Statesman’s cities microsite, becomes the New Statesman’s assistant editor (digital).

Eleanor Peake, formerly of Compass News, has joined as social media editor.

Jason Cowley said: “These appointments are to prepare for a planned expansion of the New Statesman in 2019. We have had another successful year and we will be hiring more journalists in the months ahead as we continue to grow both in print and online.”
