New data from the ONS shows just how poorly recent graduates have fared since the recession began. Joblessness among those who graduated 0-2 years ago now stands at 18.9 per cent, compared with a general unemployment rate of 8.4 per cent. However, this is still lower than the peak of 26.9 per cent seen following the recession of the early 1990s.

Unemployment among less recent graduates is significantly lower. For those who graduated 2-4 years ago, the rate stood at 6.7 per cent in the final quarter of 2011, while for those who graduated 4-6 years ago, the rate stood at 4.4 per cent.
