Duchess of Cambridge gives birth to a son

The new Prince of Cambridge, Britain's future head of state, was born at 4.24pm, weighing 8lb 6oz.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to a son at 4.24pm this afternoon, Clarence House has announced. The boy is third in line to the throne after Prince Charles and Prince William.

The baby, which weighed 8lbs 6oz, was born at the private Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, in London. The boy’s name will be announced “in due course”.

The news was announced via email to royal correspondents, and on an easel displayed outside Buckingham Palace.
