Leaders’ debate pulls in over 9 million viewers

Wins more than a third of audience share.

By Jon Bernstein

ITV will be pleased this morning to learn that its televised leaders’ debate – the first of its kind in the UK – drew an average 9.4 million viewers. That amounted to 37 per cent of the audience share between 8.30 and 10pm last night.

Viewing peaked at 10 million around 9pm, half an hour into the debate

It compares favourably with last autumn’s BBC Question Time which featured the BNP’s Nick Griffin. That controversial programme drew 7.9 million viewers.

And as expected it dwarfed the audienced for last month’s Ask the Chancellors debate on Channel 4.
