Not for the first time, Andrew Adonis speaks his mind

And shows Labour has not run out of energy.

By James Macintyre

Andrew Adonis, the minister of the moment whose efforts on high-speed rail we praise in our leader this week, is back in the news today.

Lord Adonis has hit out at the proposed strike organised by the Unite union against British Airways, which will disrupt flights between 20 and 27 March. That is a story that will have an impact on real people’s lives immediately, but it is his intervention on the House of Lords that will excite Westminster watchers.

The reforming minister called for a fully elected second chamber in an interview with us last year. Now, he has confirmed, the government is planning just that.

This can only be good news for constitutional reformers and those who want a bolder approach from a Labour Party that at one and the same time has nothing and everything to lose.
