By George Eaton

This week’s New Statesman is a special issue devoted to next Tuesday’s US midterm elections. In our cover story, Mehdi Hasan says opponents of the “Ground Zero mosque” are giving the perpetrators of the 11 September 2001 attacks exactly what they wanted: a clash of civilisations. Elsewhere, Paul Mason reports from Indiana and finds a population growing ever more restless in the face of an anaemic economic recovery.

Also this week, Alice Miles explains what Tea Party women really want, the Labour MP Jon Cruddas warns that the Tories are planning to cleanse the poor from our cities and David Blanchflower says that the economic recovery could be blown off course by George Osborne’s austerity package.

All this, plus an interview with the legendary investigative journalist Bob Woodward, Kevin Maguire’s Westminster diary and the truth about Wayne Rooney by his ghostwriter Hunter Davies.
