In this clip, Emma Donoghue speaks about her latest novel, Room, which has been shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, and reads a passage from it. Discussing her child narrator, Jack, Donoghue admits that the boy’s voice is based on her own son’s, and explains Jack’s unflinching outlook: “I really wanted a book that would be as inventive and unsentimental as children are.”

Jonathan Derbyshire interviews Emma Donoghue in this week’s issue of the New Statesman.
