The Procession to Calvary by Peter Brueghel the Younger has hung in Nostell Priory in Yorkshire for more than 200 years. The painting, which depicts Christ carrying the cross on the way to his crucifixion, is owned by Lord St Oswald but has now been put up for sale.
The Art Fund, together with the National Trust, which owns Nostell Priory, has launched a campaign to raise £2.7m in order to keep the painting in this country. The Art Fund has donated an initial £500,000 to the campaign.
It is hoped the remaining £2.2m will be raised by Christmas. And, to aid that attempt, the painting is being put on display at the National Gallery in London from 5 October to 9 November, and then at York Art Gallery from 18 November until Christmas.
