Ed Miliband and Douglas Alexander, the Climate Change and Development Secretaries, are visiting Bangladesh and India next week for talks with both countries’ leaders in the run-up to the crunch environment summit in Copenhagen in December. They will take a close-up look at the front line of climate change.
The senior ministers face a daunting task as they seek to bridge the divide between a developing south Asia and an America seemingly reluctant to reduce emissions substantially.
Both men are convinced that climate change hits the world’s poorest hardest, and – in a hectic programme – they will be inspecting slum improvement and solar-power housing schemes in Dhaka and Kolkata.
The visit comes 100 days before the summit, which will or won’t reach a global deal on carbon emissions, amid reports that world leaders have grossly underestimated the level of investment needed for developing countries.
I will be joining their whirlwind tour next week and will be sending regular impressions of what will be a crucial mission on the road to the make-or-break summit. Stay tuned to Public Accounts.
