Jury trials will resume in some crown courts in England and Wales next week, the lord chief justice has announced.
Trials were suspended in March. Under new arrangements, jurors will be spread out to allow for social distancing, while reporters and others will be able to watch proceedings via closed circuit TV from another court room. The number of jurors will be 12, as usual.
The Old Bailey in London and Cardiff Crown Court will be among the first to swear in jurors on May 18.
Trials that were cut short due to the pandemic will resume before then “where this can be done safely”, Lord Burnett of Maldon said.
