Scotland: Covid-19 deaths in care homes exceed hospital deaths for first time

Last week, Covid-19 deaths in care homes in Scotland outstripped those in hospitals for the first time, new government figures show.

In the week to Sunday, 26 April, 338 people died of coronavirus in care homes, compared to 276 in hospitals. Care home deaths accounted for 52 per cent of the total Covid-19 deaths last week.

The total number of coronavirus-related deaths in care homes jumped across the week from 537 to 886, an increase of 65 per cent. In total, 2,272 people have died from coronavirus so far, with 39 per cent dying in care homes, and 52 per cent in hospitals.

Deaths in care homes from all causes (684) also exceeded those in hospitals (633) for the first time.
