Germany’s outbreak now “controllable“, health minister says

By Samuel Horti

Germany’s coronavirus has, as of today become “controllable and manageable”, health minister Jens Spahn has said.

Since 12 April, the number of people recovering from the virus has exceeded the number of new infections. The country’s healthcare system had “at no time been overwhelmed so far”, Spahn said, declaring lockdown a success.

Some shops are due to reopen in Germany next week, while schools will begin reopening on 4 May. The country is less than four weeks away from rolling out a contact-tracing app to support the easing of lockdown restrictions (see 10:19am on this liveblog).
